I’ve since gone into type design myself, and published (and co-published) some typefaces that wouldn’t really fit well into any single category. Besides, it required me to split super families with both sans and serif designs. Problem is, my knowledge weren’t all that good and many typefaces don’t really fit into the classification. I started with a ton of torrented fonts arranged into serif, sans, slab, script, decorative, &c using Fontbook (I think, or maybe it was Linotype’s FontExplorer X? – in any case it was an application that allowed me to delete unwanted fonts, eventually leading to me corrupt some important system stuff because they were hard coded to use these seemingly useless fonts.) As I learned a bit more, I started trying my hands at a VOX classification, and I started licensing some fonts.
